Please note by registering your interest you are NOT applying for a course.  This is to gauge the interest of crew in attending this type of course.  We would also like to hear what elements you would like to see on the course so that we know the training is meeting crew needs as directly

Course Profile:

To run over three days in Galway in January 2023.

This workshop aims to introduce, educate and prepare participants for an entry-level position as a camera trainee for work in Film and TV. The course will focus on techniques and equipment used by current productions.

The course tutor will be Cinematographer Ciarán Tanham ISC, Course supervisor will be John Leahy along with an experienced Camera Assistant / Focus Puller.

The course will also give each participant ‘hands-on’ time with each of the most popular and currently used camera systems and will involve lectures and demonstrations. This course is being run in partnership with Crew Academy West.

This course will run over 3 days from 10 am – 4 pm each day.

Participant Profile:

The ideal applicants will have two to three years of experience in a film / TV-related college course or similar workshop or proven experience working with cameras and should have at least a basic understanding of the principles of photography.

The course is limited to MAX 15 participants

selection will be based on the quality of the application

Tutor Profile:

John Leahy has a career in Film & TV spanning four decades, running training courses for the Camera Department since 2001. His extensive production experience spans both Irish and International Film and TV drama for channels such as RTE, HULU, Virgin Media, BBC, ITV, and Netflix, with a wide range of camera equipment. John’s credits include ‘Green Knight’, ‘Ondine’, ’Frank’, ‘Gretel & Hansel’, ‘Greta’, ‘Becoming Jane’, ‘Breakfast on Pluto’, ‘Michael Collins’, ‘Kin 2’, ‘Normal People’, Into the Badlands’, ‘Penny Dreadful’, to name only a few from John’s extensive and varied career.

Ciarán Tanham ISC has been working in the Irish film industry since the early 80’s, working on Irish classics such as ‘Ballykissangel’, ‘D’Telly’, ‘Killinaskully’, ‘Raw’, ‘Love/Hate’, and more recently “Vivarium’, ‘Finding You’, and ‘Smother’. Ciarán has comprehensive experience working with a wide range of camera equipment and is eager to pass on his knowledge to the next generation of camera department crew.
